Pornhub’s New Strip Poker Website Takes Care Of All Your Vices At Once

Our friend’s table section includes those that only people in your friends list can access.

Most of the croupiers are Costa Rica women, but occasionally well-known porn stars like Monique Alexander or Dani Daniels are expected to fly down and work the roulette wheel or blackjack tables.

Also on HuffPost:

“The timing for this is perfect,” he said. “We decided to take a gamble –pun intended — and go ahead with the idea.”

The idea of combining sex and gambling is a long time coming for Pornhub, according to vice president Corey Price.

The Huffington Post attempted to play strip poker, but a spokesman said the company is in the process of hiring more dealers for that particular game..

The carnal-themed casino’s focus is getting members to spend their wad rather than blow it, but there are some allusions to Pornhub’s main business.

On Monday, officially opened the aptly named Pornhub Casino, an online gambling casino where participants can play roulette, Blackjack and even strip poker.

Price doesn’t seem concerned.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to enter an industry that is experiencing exponential growth and we’re excited to make our mark.”

“It’s available in two options: public tables and friend’s tables,” Price said. “At Pornhub we are constantly looking at ways to penetrate additional industries, grow our global community and expand our brand recognition.

A popular porn portal is thrusting into a new venture — online gambling.

“We use webcams so everyone can see each other and speak to one another as though you would in a real setting. Also, a win on the online slot machine results in a quick scene from an adult movie.

However, Kostin sees one big problem for the consumer.

“Our users know a thing or two about having a good time online, so when a casino company approached us with an opportunity to blend gambling with porn, we had to consider it seriously,” he said by email. “Our public tables are viewable by all players and anyone can join. “They will likely face regulatory scrutiny and should have very strong know your customer policies.”

However, the connection to porn might arouse the attention of regulators.

“From my personal players’ perspective, I can say that it might be tough to focus on a roulette strategy while live dealers are taking their bras off,” he said.

The croupiers occasionally flash their breasts to players who ask nicely through a chat box. So yes, people who play will be visible.”

Can an online casino cum porn website work? Braden Perry, an attorney familiar with the regulatory procedures governing online gambling, says there’s nothing inherently illegal about the Pornhub Casino business model.

Alexander Kostin, of, an organization that advocates for transparency in the gambling, says Pornhub’s plan is “a really smart attempt to prohibit its core audience from leaving the site after they have accomplished their sexual goal.”

One of the selling points the casino is using to attract players is the online video strip poker.

“Companies that add new, novel, or distinct services or products can get in the crosshairs of regulators,” Perry said

“I’m not pro sports gambling. I’m just a realist.”

The title of the exercise? “As Close as You Ever Want to Get to a Federally Prosecuted Sports Betting Trial.” In it, Assistant U.S. The move made sense to many in New Jersey, where ailing gaming and racing industries were causing financial strain. “And while I wouldn’t categorize that as sports betting, on the continuum of no betting at all and legalized betting, it’s certainly on the spectrum.”

His time overseas coincided with the Donaghy scandal and the revelation, as Silver puts it, “of how important it is to have a way of monitoring irregular activity in our games.” He adds, “None of the systems we had in place had captured any betting by Donaghy.”

Fans weren’t the only ones talking about it. “We’re still in the monitoring stage,” he says. While the NBA is still fighting in the courts to keep New Jersey from setting up its own sports-betting operation, three other states (New York, Indiana and South Carolina) have introduced similar bills this year, and a Minnesota state representative, Phyllis Kahn, has told ESPN that she’ll be introducing a sports-betting proposal early in this legislative session.

I have talked to the other commissioners about it. In September 2014, citing a loophole in the Department of Justice’s language about violations to PASPA, Christie issued a directive to legalize. commissioner to publicly support legalized sports gambling. “I felt the need to explain why I had made other statements acknowledging that I thought sports betting should be legalized,” Silver says. “I recognize that it can be very damaging to a person or a person’s family, just like other substances of potential abuse taken to extremes. “We did everything possible to encourage it while publicly condemning gambling. In those meetings, sources with direct knowledge say, contingency plans were formed in preparation for the day sports betting is legal outside of Nevada.

Stern began thinking along the same lines.

Silver says he hasn’t set a timetable for the day when we can legally bet on a Cavaliers-Heat game. It could have continued to treat sports betting as the enemy that for as long as anyone could remember had threatened the very fabric of the game. . “Then we began getting approached by sports-betting companies outside of the United States, where it’s legal, to do business with them. You don’t have to be a cynic to think that the leagues and their owners want a piece of that very big betting pie.

With the proliferation of casinos and state lotteries, the instant gratification of the Internet and the boom in daily fantasy sports, betting was becoming part of mainstream America. Specifically, New Jersey Gov. That’s when Silver says he began to realize the need for a response. “As someone who attends an enormous number of games, I’m often hearing fans talking about it,” Silver says. In 516 words, he diagnosed the reality of sports betting in the U.S.: Federal and state laws are not stopping anyone from betting. “We have always known betting, fantasy leagues and daily [fantasy] sports have driven interest and viewership,” wrote the Mavericks’ owner in a recent email exchange with The Magazine. She was represented by Ifrah, while David Deitch, a former Justice Department attorney, represented the government. 13, 2014, editorial in The New York Times, penned by new commissioner Adam Silver: I believe that sports betting should be brought out of the underground and into the sunlight where it can be appropriately monitored and regulated. (One study by Nevada gaming company Club Cal Neva projected a possible windfall of $50 million for Atlantic City casinos if betting was legalized.) But the leagues — the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB — and the NCAA sued, claiming that the state was in violation of PASPA and that the perception of the integrity of the games would be damaged if New Jersey began taking legal bets.

THEN CAME SILVER’S op-ed. And publicly, it did. The case is headed to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals this spring.

Cuban has suggested that one way of monetizing that interest is to charge sportsbooks and casinos licensing fees to use the league’s data. In England, bets can be placed on a smartphone, at a stadium kiosk or even using a TV remote control. “My greatest concern,” he says, “is that there will be, in essence, a hodgepodge of regulations controlling sports betting that will vary from state to state, jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and will make it increasingly difficult to monitor betting on our very own sport.”

Privately, though, the league was watching — closely — as the Vegas market and legal daily fantasy sites were growing exponentially. “As we began to stage exhibition games in Europe and China and jurisdictions where sports betting was legal, it caused me to focus more on this than I had historically,” Silver says. “But I view myself more as pro transparency. He’s relaxed, though not unguarded. It studied and researched and planned behind closed doors before it made its move. 16 Gambling Issue. … “Yet at the same time, we were opposing the New Jersey legislation in multiple court actions. Included in the forum, which wasn’t open to the public, were talks with law enforcement officials, gaming regulators, addiction specialists and even a former student-athlete caught up in sports gambling. gaming laws, including PASPA and the Wire Act, which prohibits any betting activity that includes wire transmissions. The “defendant,” “Ginger McKenna,” was accused of facilitating illegal sports bets. Regardless of public positioning, all the leagues are actively planning for a new gambling reality. Or on Silver, who gained extensive knowledge of foreign revenue models during his time overseas. One week later, the NBA was due back in court as part of its ongoing fight to prevent New Jersey from making sports betting legal. Chris Christie, who in 2012 began pushing to legalize sports betting in his state by challenging the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) of 1992, the federal ban on state-sponsored sports betting. And someone who’s a realist in the business. And when it did, it was not subtle.

This story appears in ESPN The Magazine’s Feb. On the one side are those who tell you that’s the way it’s always been done, and on the other are those who urge you to change and adapt.

Studying models is one thing. There also have been other, more private confabs involving high-ranking advisers to the leagues. But the state didn’t give up. And in New Zealand, sportsbook giant TAB paid more than $5 million last year in commissions to the leagues it takes wagers on. In 2013, $1.05 billion was wagered legally on basketball, combining the professional and college levels. I needed a forum to make it clear.”

So it is, then, that for now, at least, Silver seems comfortable standing alone as the only acting U.S. But the timing of the op-ed allowed him to address another seeming hypocrisy: Just one day prior to its publication, the league announced a deal with a successful daily fantasy operator called FanDuel, which boasted some $621 million in entry fees last year alone. “In light of these domestic and global trends,” he wrote, “the laws on sports betting should be changed. The best way for the league to monitor our integrity is for that betting action to move toward legal betting organizations, where it can be tracked. A 2007 letter signed by all general counsels of the major sports leagues and the NCAA, including NBA vice president Rick Buchanan, stated, “The harms caused by government endorsement of sports betting far exceed the alleged benefits.”

The opportunity for additional streams of capital from sports betting can’t be lost on U.S. Gary Bettman, the longtime commissioner of the NHL, told CNN in November after Silver’s op-ed was published: “I think there needs to be some attention paid to what sports is going to represent to young people. In 2009, the then-commissioner told Sports Illustrated, when asked if legal sports betting would be in the NBA’s best interest, “It has been a matter of league policy to answer that question no. As we became more of a global company, I began to think about what our policy should be here.”

The timing of the column, of course, was calculated. In that dark moment, the NBA could very well have hunkered down and waited for the dawn. Subscribe today!

When asked about the support he’s getting from other leagues, Silver says, “I have talked to the commissioners in the other leagues about it, and I leave it to them to make any public statements they want to make on it. “The league and many of our teams are actively engaged in the so-called daily fantasy business,” Silver says. All of them have assigned people to study the issue intensively.

” — NBA commissioner Adam Silver

The Donaghy revelation became the ugliest gambling scandal to hit an American professional sport since at least Pete Rose’s banishment from baseball in 1989 and perhaps since the Black Sox threw the 1919 World Series. MLB declined to comment for this story, and the NFL refused to even reiterate its anti-legalization stance. Billions of dollars are being illegally wagered on sports, almost all online. The NBA deal also included an equity stake in the company. I will say that certainly all of them … District Judge Michael Shipp ruled in favor of the leagues. The illegal market across sports? Try 132 times that — an estimated $138.9 billion, according to the American Gaming Association. “One of my concerns is that I will be portrayed as pro sports betting,” he says. have assigned people in their organizations to study the issue intensively.”

PERHAPS THE BEST Silver can hope for from other commissioners is a new view of sports betting as a possible “frenemy.” It is tricky, after all, for the leagues to embrace something they’ve long denounced for its impact on the “integrity of the game.” It would also be naive to think that this is all about the sanctity of the results. Attorney Harris Fischman examined major U.S.

THE NBA’S DARKEST hour can actually be marked by a single moment, concentrated down to the uttering of a sentence.  “I can tell you that this is the most serious situation and worst situation that I have ever experienced either as a fan of the NBA, a lawyer for the NBA or a commissioner of the NBA.” That was the lament of then-commissioner David Stern during a July 24, 2007, news conference announcing that referee Tim Donaghy was under federal investigation for betting on games. So were politicians. team owners. He spent time overseas growing the NBA’s brand, giving him a vantage point to see how legalized gambling worked in other countries. Deitch prevailed.

Leave it to Mark Cuban to be frank about that aspect of the NBA’s support for legalization. Just 88 days into his tenure as NBA commissioner, on April 29, 2014, Silver banned Clippers owner Donald Sterling in a four-minute proclamation on national TV, his willingness to stand alone in full view.

In September, Silver told an audience at a Bloomberg sports business conference that expanded legalized sports betting in the U.S. “I am very sensitive to people thinking that I’m not understanding of the downsides,” he says. In September 2012, the NFL convened a forum in collaboration with other pro leagues, the International Olympic Committee and the NCAA to discuss best practices, law enforcement resources and the gambling industry. It saw how all that interest, as well as action from illegal offshore betting sites, fueled NBA fandom, and it realized it needed to have a seat at the table — the better to monitor and monetize those burgeoning passions. That’s the pragmatic approach.”

But multiple sources with direct knowledge of meetings between the leagues believe the NHL is much more open to legalization than Bettman’s comments indicate. But you can bet all interested parties — the other leagues, the states, the bookmakers, the bettors — are following the developments as closely as they would a point spread.

And so after taking over for Stern last February, Silver wasted little time implementing his approach. But Adam Silver has proved otherwise. was “inevitable” because cash-strapped states need the revenue.

SPORTS IS AN ongoing contest between two forces: tradition and innovation. That’s yet another reason I think it needs to be closely monitored.”

The bald 52-year-old man in glasses and a conservative dark suit doesn’t look like an agent of change — especially with the 1970s soul music playing in the background on the set at a recent photo shoot for The Mag. In March, two NBA attorneys attended a mock sports-betting trial put on by gaming attorney Jeff Ifrah at iGaming North America at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Actually establishing a legal framework is another. Once again, the leagues sued and won. But I think that league policy was formulated at a time when gambling was far less widespread — even legally.”

In November 2011, New Jersey voters had overwhelmingly approved a referendum to legalize Las Vegas-style sports betting at racetracks and casinos across the state. Does it become a vehicle for betting, which may in effect change the atmosphere in the arenas?”

Through it all, Silver has remained steadfast that legal sports gambling should be addressed first on the federal, not state, level. “Even if they’re not betting, they’re highly aware of the betting line and over/unders.”

In the meantime, Silver is willing to take the lead on an issue that some liken to the legalization of marijuana — socially acceptable but mostly illegal. And the NHL and MLB are both currently partnered with daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings.

The NBA’s pivot point on legalized gambling appeared in a Nov. “We have studied the New Zealand model and other models in other jurisdictions,” he says.

The evolution of Silver as gambling realist in many ways began in 2006, after he took over the league’s international operations as deputy commissioner. Congress should adopt a federal framework that allows states to authorize betting on professional sports, subject to strict regulatory requirements and technological safeguards.”

A united front among all the leagues would certainly help Silver’s cause for a federal solution. In some areas of Australia, for example, sportsbooks pay fees to leagues based on the gross revenue made off the wagering of the games. I’m glad Adam is putting the hypocrisy behind us and putting it all up front.”

Nine months later, on a cold January afternoon on the 19th floor of league headquarters in Midtown Manhattan, with Hot Chocolate’s “You Sexy Thing” playing, Silver is loose and joking, all the while being prepped for his cover shoot. The other leagues have — at least publicly — not wavered from their anti-legalization stance after the op-ed. But that’s not to say he and the NBA are the only ones re-examining their approach

Cybergambling returns — and this time it’s legal

market research firm H2 Gambling Capital, which focuses on the gaming industry, predicted about $300 million for New Jersey’s online casinos — or about $45 million in tax revenue, according to the New York Times. But new laws across the nation are rolling the rules back — and lawmakers think they’re holding a royal flush.

“Prohibition simply does not work,” Geoff Freeman told a House panel on Dec. In online casino gambling, it’s about the game more than the bet.”

“It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out,” said Laurence DeGaris, associate professor of marketing at the University of Indianapolis and an expert in Internet culture.

‘Last year, before a single state authorized legal online gaming, Americans spent nearly $3 billion.’

“Those from other states can play, but they cannot wager,” Fenton said. Gov. H2 said the industry was worth $33 billion in 2013, with $4.5 billion coming from mobile gambling on iPads, iPhones and smartphones.

“Last year, before a single state authorized legal online gaming, Americans spent nearly $3 billion on illegal, unregulated offshore gaming sites. That doesn’t translate online,” DeGaris told will catch up to the rest of the world and allow it at some point.”

Legalizing gambling across the U.S. “The technology is rolling out this week.”

And New Jersey isn’t alone; eight other states have bills in the works that will allow Internet gambling as well. If your phone is off, or if you’re too near state borders, you may not be allowed to play.

. They play against the house at Virgin Casino, and they can finance their wagers with debit cards, credit cards, or in person.

“Slots and roulette are very visceral games, lots of bells and whistles. 10. Virgin could be holding a full house, but it could also fail before the flop.

Many Americans simply ignored the ban, he noted, as the country did during Prohibition in the ’20s.

Congress banned online gambling in 2006. will generate – in addition to tax revenue from the proceeds at casinos – approximately 22,000 new online gambling-related jobs, Freeman testified.

What happens online, stays online

Six other firms, including popular companies like and Ultimate Poker and other casinos like Caesars and the Golden Nugget, participated in the “soft play” launch of online gambling in New Jersey in November, the state’s Department of Gaming Enforcement Director Dave Rebuck said during a recent conference call.

Globally, the business is even more lucrative. market could be worth as much as $9 billion in the coming years as other states, including California, legalize online wagering.

Freeman said the Department of Justice has relaxed its views toward online gambling since 2011, and this could open up even more opportunities in the U.S. “Blackjack and poker have a very human element that’s lost online. “If we are unable to determine that you are in New Jersey, you will be unable to play on Virgin Casino,” the site notes. Not just poker.”

Mega-entrepreneur Richard Branson’s Virgin Group is the latest entry in online gambling, teaming with the Tropicana Resort in Atlantic City and online game maker Gamesys to bring online poker, blackjack and slots to New Jersey this week. Chris Christie validated the vice in the waning weeks of 2013, saying he hoped to rake in $1 billion in casino revenues this year, of which the state will collect a 17 percent tax.

But analysts are mostly rolling with Christie and the casinos. Others predict the overall U.S. Nevada and Delaware also began offering some online gambling last year, but New Jersey is the first state to “fully” legalize it, said Lee Fenton, the chief operating officer of Gamesys.

“There will be many games to play online in New Jersey,” Fenton told “Blackjack, slots. U.K. “The federal government has tried the prohibition approach – specifically the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 and the Wire Act – and through multiple Justice Department crackdowns on offshore operators as well.”

Prohibition failed – again

Last month, the president and CEO of the American Gaming Association testified before Congress and urged legislators to repeal their 7-year-old ban on Internet gambling.

“In sports gambling, it’s about the bet,” DeGaris said. To put that into further context, Americans accounted for nearly 10 percent of the entire $33 billion worldwide online gaming market,” Freeman said.

- Geoff Freeman, president and CEO of the American Gaming Association

To prevent unauthorized access, Virgin Casino physically locates gamers’ cellphones periodically. “That’s where I see the huge potential in online gambling, and I reckon the U.S.

Players must be at least 21 years old, and either reside in New Jersey or be in the state when they place their bets. — notably sports betting.

Chocolate Diamond Jewelry Industry Scam

. the color of the suit you buried your grandpa in).  Le Vian Jewelers is generally given credit for coming up with the name (they trademarked it).  And to show what audacious liars they are, here’s part of their corporate statement (written by their obviously evil designer and CEO) about chocolate diamonds:

And in that waste in the color spectrum perhaps the most common is the “brown” diamond.  While carrying the hardness of any diamond, the brown diamond (much like a turd) does not reflect and refract light very well.  In fact, these diamonds were once considered so worthless for jewelry, regardless of size, that they weren’t even assessed on the industry’s diamond color scale when found.  They usually went straight to factories, tool and die companies, and other industries for applications in sandpaper, other abrasives, polishers, or coated on drill bits and saw blades for extra “bite”. uh .

On the Hershey Highway

Now we need to look more closely at that last “c” in the Four C classification system, “color”.

Since then, the lowly brown diamond was rechristened as “chocolate” (because, hey, chocolate is yummy, and brown is . People had to wait in long lines for gas at stations (on those days when said stations even had gas to dispense).

And it worked!

Such valuable brown stones are the exception, however.  The mining operations continued to keep dredging up the lesser ones while nothing of interest to the general public was done with them.

Another policy that resulted in its global monopoly was De Beers’ buying up of diamonds from other producers, hoarding them, and only releasing fixed quantities to keep prices up.  Intimidation, thuggery, and much bloodletting were involved in bringing independent mining operations, and their output, under De Beers’ control.  [The history of De Beers, with its colonial policies, intrigues, and interference with indigenous populations is a fascinating one, worthy of separate exploration by anyone.]

It should come as no surprise, then, that the ignorant have been deluded once again into paying big money for something they don’t need.  An entire, very lucrative, industry has scammed its way into the hearts and wallets of Joe Schmo based on something that–until about 1986–was so ill-regarded it was considered garbage, an item with almost no worth except in an industrial setting.  This scammy product usually makes its insidious and unwelcome presence more aggressively known as holidays approach (Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Groundhog Day, Mother’s Day, et al).

Cut Out the Chocolate!

With Valentine’s Day rearing its ugly head the ads keep coming harder!  And they’ll getcha, sucka, if not now then later on in the year near Mothers’ Day and Christmas, too.  Maybe even Presidents’ Day, who knows?

But just because De Beers has lost its iron-fisted grip on the marketplace doesn’t mean other diamond producers, brokers, and retailers aren’t doing their best to continue the model of “limited supply equals high dollars”.  De Beers, its business model intact, has been replaced globally by an outfit headquartered in England, Central Selling Organization, or CSO.  It is no different in its actions than De Beers (except, perhaps, for maybe not murdering recalcitrant mine workers or reluctant mine owners and operators unwilling to come into the fold). . The rest is so much valueless junk.

Ladies, when receiving such a thing, slap yo’ man (or woman, if you are of that particular turn of that wheel) as hard as you can across his/her big, sappy, love-struck chops if he/she brings home anything with chocolate diamonds in it as a love offering on those “special” occasions (like Groundhog Day).

The reason to crack someone across the piehole?  That moron just spent a buncha money on something that is better used to dust a drill bit or coat a circular saw blade, that’s why.  And, worse than that, your benefactor was stupid enough to buy into the hype!  So, crack him/her a good one, right square in the yap.

That all changed in 1986 when a new mine in Australia was developed, the Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia..  As the hardest substance in the world the browns had a job to do and did it very well.

But one of those jobs was not to be a piece of jewelry.  Sure, there have been a handful of “famous” brown diamonds cut and mounted, but these are most notable for their sheer size (recall that “carat weight” is a major factor in appraising such a stone–the bigger, the better).  In fact, the largest cut stone now in the world was found in the rough at over 750 carats (around 150 g).  It came from–natch–a De Beers mine in South Africa in 1985.  The final cut version is almost 550 carats (almost 110 g) and bears the name “Golden Jubilee Diamond”; it was gifted to the King of Thailand in 2000 on the 50th anniversary of his coronation.

The Swindle

With a largish stock of an undesirable commodity on hand the jewelry industry came up with a plan.  How about polishing these things, rebrand them as “chocolate”, lie to the public by telling them they are rare and valuable, and sell the hell out of them at high prices?

“Chosen for their rarity and chocolate flavor”?  You’re joking, right?  We all now know these are not rare.  As for their chocolate flavor, has this CEO ever eaten one?  Do they, indeed, taste chocolaty, like Ovaltine?  Or do they taste more like Hershey’s syrup?  Are you for real, guy?  [Oh, and I do believe that Le Vian doesn’t own a “brand of fancy color diamonds”–that would be the Earth itself that owns that particular brand.]  This is a scam, plain and simple, and the Newspeak used by that company’s CEO is laughable at best.  [Oh, and adding insult to the major injury already inflicted, many of these “fine” jewelry pieces featuring the always lovely chocolate diamond are accented with synthetic stones!]

Never mind the fact there is no such thing as an aphrodisiac (other than the human brain).  Listen, instead, to how insulting to anyone’s intelligence this commercial is.  Pay attention!  They make this thing–once about as popular as a pube on a bar of soap–sound as if it really is special!

[Spoiler alert: if you’ve been reading closely you’ll realize it ain’t special, not one bit!]

Back to your school days.  Another thing you probably learned about diamonds is they are very rare, another reason why they cost so much.

In the normal world of supply-and-demand such a readily available item would go for cheap.  Not so with diamonds, though.  Despite there being enough diamonds in the world to toss around like confetti at a ticker-tape parade the quantity available in the world at any given time is tightly controlled by consortia that operate no differently, by and large, than your average drug cartel.

As probably everyone knows diamonds can be found in any color or tone of the visible light spectrum, from jet black, to blue values, through yellow, until reaching the most desirable, the “perfectly” clear, transparent stone known as “white”.

Most diamonds found are colored to some degree (there are even green ones).  This is from impurities that bonded with carbon under high pressure and temperatures over millennia, forming a natural diamond.  [Another myth to destroy about diamonds, too: while, like coal, it is made of carbon, a diamond is not an advanced evolutionary step in a lump of coal’s life.  While the processes are similar, diamonds–unlike coal, almost pure carbon–are created independently of coal formation, though diamonds may be found in or near coal veins.]

Well, I take back part of the last statement: the chocolate diamond is very valuable, but only to the jewelry industry that possesses a glut of them.  The public, however, has been righteously–and perhaps, deservedly–conned!

The “rarity” part is a lie of epic proportions–diamonds are not one bit rare.  “Wait, what?” you say.  “Not rare?  But I’ve been told that all my life.  How can that be, Vic Dillinger?”  Well, the plain truth is there are many, many diamond mines around the world (though precious few volume producers in the US).  They generate tons of diamonds, and a bazillion dollars’ worth are cleaned up and processed annually.

This practice began with De Beers, a bloodthirsty organization started by Cecil Rhodes, founder of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe and Zambia), the company later named for the diamond mine Rhodes bought from a South African farmer, a man named de Beers, in the late 1800s.  This group became controlled by a moneyed and influential family, the Oppenheimers, and under their guidance De Beers strong-armed a virtual world monopoly on diamonds for more than eight decades (ending over the years 2000 through 2011 for reasons too complex and numerous to go into now).

We Gotcha, Sucka!Chump Stains of the World: Open Your Wallets!

The average shmendrik is usually led around by the nose when it comes to marketing and advertising people: “I need that REALLY BIG-SCREAM TEE-VEE, make it a curved one, too!”

Sure enough, with no surplus supply (or even daily usage guaranteed) the prices of anything related to petroleum (gasoline, home heating, and plastics) rose dramatically. . .  Thus, the cycle of hoarding and releasing controlled stones into the market place, price fixing, and other aspects of Sir Ernst Oppenheimer’s business methods are still with us today, De Beers or no De Beers.

Keep in mind there is nothing wrong with a person looking at one of these diarrhea-colored stones and liking it as something to wear (a polished chunk of beer bottle glass is just as attractive in my book).  What that person needs to be aware of, though, is that he or she has been manipulated by a very slick, ongoing ad campaign, and is definitely being ripped off at the cash register.  If you just gotta have one, my advice is to buy a loose stone and have it mounted.  Don’t pay those absurd prices!

Sound like a good plan?

Diamonds?  Rare?  Really?

From almost everyone’s earliest school days they are told that diamonds are the hardest known substance.  True: they are the hardest known naturally occurring substance.  People also learn diamonds are precious stones; what makes them precious, at least for a diamond, is their ability to brilliantly reflect and refract light in prismatic colors.  In other words, they sparkle (“Ooooooh, a shiny object!! Lemme at it!!”).

And, in the process, everyone else can do themselves a favor to stop this madness: don’t buy into the load of chocolaty hooey you’re being sold!

This mine’s problem?  About 80% of what comes out of it are brown diamonds!  This mine accounts for, by itself, slightly over one-third of the world’s supply of brown diamonds.  The question then became, “What can we do with this crap?”

You bet it was.

The same is true of the diamond industry.  It is tightly controlled to make sure only enough stones are on the market, at high prices, to sustain those high prices.  Too many diamonds on the free market and prices would drop.

The other three “c” words are “carat weight”, “cut”, and “color”.  Diamonds don’t always come very large in the rough, so bigger is better and, therefore, more valuable.  And the gemologists’ work on faceting and cleaning up the rough stone enhances the “sparkle”–a badly cut diamond will lose value over one dressed by a pro.

But it looks cool–I know, right?  [And, yeah, I know, IMAX screens are slightly curved to immerse the viewer in the experience, but wouldja just look at the size of those damn screens?  That’s how they look better: size.  Put a curved IMAX-sized screen in your house; then come talk to me about the benefits of a curved viewing surface.  People, please!!]

Curved-screen TVs are making their way into the homes of the uninformed and those who feel compelled to keep up with electronics’ trends (which is why Apple can release a new iPhone about every six weeks with very little changes from the earlier model and yet the sheeple will buy them).   The curved-screen design is beginning to sell well despite the fact that, at the average viewing distance a normal person sits from the boob tube, there is no discernible difference in the image on the TV from a regular flat screen.

And that, children, is why diamonds are considered rare: not because there aren’t enough in the world but because some group restricts the number of them on the market.

The bloodbath OPEC started didn’t end there, though.  National speed limits in the US were reduced to 55 mph (88 km/hr) believing this saved on gasoline consumption (but in terms of productivity lost on the road at slower speeds it saved nothing).  We also got lectures on setting our heating thermostats down to 65° F (about 18° C) in the winter (an uncomfortable temperature: “Put on a sweater, Vic!”  “Screw you! I’m not putting my clothes back on!  Turn up the heat!”)  And, in an effort to make US cars more fuel efficient by cutting their weight with lighter materials and reducing their sizes, we had some of the stupidest looking and lowest powered vehicles on the road in the mid 1970s.

In the end, OPEC won in their stand-off.  Oil prices jacked up, the wealthy got wealthier, and the rest of us suffered under inflationary conditions.

For the not so fetus-y readers, you may recall the “gas shortage” of the early to mid 1970s which caused major financial problems in the US and everywhere else in the developed world.  Guess what?  There was no gas shortage nor was there a shortage of crude oil.  The “shortage” was created as an artificial means to jack up oil barrel prices by the cartel known as “OPEC” (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries).  The countries involved in exporting oil didn’t like the low market prices.  To change that, they got together (as any good cartel would) and decided to reduce production to a trickle.  This led to a lower supply while the demand for oil remained the same.

We’ll get to the other “c”-word, “color”, in a minute or two.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the chocolate diamond, a worthless piece of tainted carbon that, thanks to ruthless (and outright lying) p.r., has been embraced by the sheeple as a rare and valuable commodity!  The surprise, of course, for the pedestrian consumer–who shelled out the big bucks–is that a brown (or “chocolate”) diamond is neither rare nor valuable!

What helps with that “sparkle” is one of the Four C’s used to assign a worth to a particular stone.  That “c” is “clarity”.  The more translucent and free of impurities a particular diamond is, the more valuable it is since its light catch-and-release abilities are greater than a clouded one.

“Chocolate Diamonds® are Le Vian’s proprietary brand of natural fancy color diamonds that are chosen for their rarity and chocolate flavor.  Le Vian owns the international registration for the Chocolate Diamonds® trademark worldwide.”

Fellas (or women, if you are of a particular turn of that wheel) don’t be chump stains, buying your wife/girlfriend/conjugal-visit partner a ring or anything else with the “rare” and “valuable” chocolate diamonds in it.  You’d do just as well giving her a rusted nail bent into a ring shape with a chunk of gravel super-glued to it for all the brown diamonds are worth.  [Or, better yet, you can take a lump of what we humans excrete often, polish it mightily, and mount that on a few pennyweights’ worth of gold.  This would have about the same value as a chocolate diamond ring.  Plus, it’s the thought that counts behind handmade gifts, right?]

The word “rare” is heard in this commercial (liars!)

De Beers, headquartered in Luxembourg, is the insidious group that owned and operated the biggest diamond mines in the world; it dictated for most of the 20th Century the number of stones released into the wilds, too.  It grew fabulously wealthy to the point of telling governments what to do, setting foreign policy in the African lands where it operated mines, and generally threw its weight around.

The marketing strategy pushing these stones targets women (and, by default, the gullible men and womenfolk who want to please the women in their lives).  The ad campaigns are extremely sexist and pandering.

And, yes, the words “exotic” and “rare” are bandied about in the commercials, while also attempting to appeal to human sensuality.  The commercial here, for example, claims that women have a favorite aphrodisiac, and–guess what?–it’s chocolate!  So, combining the color of chocolate with a hunk of worthless carbon is apparently supposed to get her rarin’ to go when you hand it over!

Mining operations dredge up tons of rock daily.  In that morass only a tiny percentage of what is recovered can be considered as useful for gemstones

Boys Who Want to Read Like Middle Schoolers

It is still an enjoyable read, especially for middle schoolers who can relate to the main character Greg Heffley’s adjustment to school or anyone who wants a fun perspective of school and family life. Jarrett J. Other superheros have come in other forms, such as the lunch ladies behind the cafeteria counter. These full-length novels are complete stories that are illustrated in which the pictures are important to the telling of the story.

Superhero comics such as Marvel Comics have created hardcover stories to read out to this kind of audience. Characters deal with middle school topics but the reading level is lower, around fourth grade.

Visual readers who enjoy comics are likely fans of graphic novels. This books with a second grade readability is still popular up to fifth grade.. The same is true for James Patterson’s Middle School or I Funny series.

The Bone series by Jeff Smith is another example of graphic novel that entice struggling readers who want to read within their interest level. Krosoczka created The Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute and has a complete series. Easy reading for middle school interests, this nine-book series even earns high reviews from other parents of struggling readers.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series does not necessarily fall under the graphic novel category, but its illustrated format does not automatically categorize it with regular novels
