Risk Management – InfoBarrel

At present, Facebook is the king of the hill, but the brief history of online social media has demonstrated a fickleness that must occasionally terrify the project risk managers of that company. Some aspects of risk management are certainly fundamental and thus will always apply, but in systems that are being defined on a daily basis certain traditional elements of planning for risk will surely fall short.. Although this ultimate end cannot truly be achieved in our uncertain world, the success rate of project risk management is astonishing when implemented properly.

The key to navigating the uncertainty inherent in systems that are constantly metamorphosing will be cultivating a realistic understanding of what risk management is capable of. This principle will continue to govern the degree of success those responses will deliver.

Rich Pethia, director of Carnegie Mellon University’s Computer Emergency Response Team, warns against what he calls “check-the-box compliance” when it comes to implementing information security technologies. As systems grew, opinions about the inevitability of adverse risk were questioned. The determination that brought about the successful methodologies utilized today must be channeled into flexible mindsets prepared to react to changes as they occur. Unfortunately risk management is frequently underestimated, especially in the software development industry.

As technology and organizations became increasingly complex, risk management strategies adapted to meet new challenges with varying levels of success. Another prime example is social media. Modeling techniques like decision trees further expanded the discipline, allowing greater accuracy in planned risk responses. The contemporary stance regarding risk management is that risk can be assessed, publicized, and effectively eliminated by revealing its root cause.

This gradual transformation of assumptions concerning risk has produced approaches to risk management that allow project managers to prevent much of the chaos that formerly threatened projects. Information security, especially online security, is one of several increasingly unpredictable systems that does not respond well to cookie-cutter approaches to handling risk. Before risk management methodologies emerged, incertitude was considered a certainty. The attitudes that led to current risk management strategies may very well need to be reversed to avoid serious failures in systems that are changing too quickly to assess all the potential risk factors.

Information security systems are only one case of emerging technologies that have the potential to disrupt the established models of risk management. The concept that risk could be anticipated to a certain degree took hold and became prevalent. The goal of risk management progressively became monitoring and controlling risk factors to the extent that they could be rendered incapable of preventing the success of a project. Exceptional software solutions such as Monte Carlo simulation programs remove the guesswork by developing models and testing scenarios for risk analysis. The benefits are difficult to refute, but there is a potential danger.

The leap from games of chance to financial instruments took the concept of risk mitigation with it. Prior to established methods of addressing project risks, chance often dictated success, and history overflows with the results of that type of planning. Methodologies currently available can reduce risk management to what essentially amounts to a checklist. Pethia goes on to say that even measuring risk management progress in terms of benchmarks is difficult when it comes to security. Development of these advancements has been motivated by the belief that risk can be conquered. Over the centuries, the beliefs held about risk have shaped our responses to it. Insurance was another financial tool designed to shield people from monetary loss. Stubborn adherence to prevailing approaches could prove to be just as detrimental to success as the now obsolete view that risk cannot be managed at all. From its inception the concept of risk management has centered on preventing the loss of resources.

This progression from simple methods of increasing the odds of winning a bet and safeguarding investments to full-blown analysis for the sake of controlling risk demonstrates a steady shift in the attitude taken toward the phenomenon of uncertainty in systems. As these analyses became more refined, tools such as probability matrices were developed to gauge the impact of various risks. Options and futures were two of the earliest mechanisms for reducing risk for commodity buyers. Methodologies went from simply indentifying risk factors to performing detailed risk analysis. These foundations have evolved into many focused risk management strategies, but the underlying motives have always been increasing profit and reducing or eliminating loss. Less shocking is the initial impetus for the development, which was to win more often at gambling.

In many ways modern civilization is defined by its ability to understand and control risk. It is actually quite surprising how long it took for the mathematical basis for systematic treatment of risk to emerge

12 Effective Tips to Get Rid of Gambling Addiction

As he spends more gambling, he requires more money to recover his losses. Here are some useful tips regarding lifestyle changes to get rid of a gambling addiction.

. Study results show that a gambler who has not been treated for compulsive gambling during his desperation phase is likely to commit suicide. He lies to his family and friends, borrows money, and loses control over his mind and behavior. Researchers have noticed increased rates of mental health disorders in gamblers with severe ludo mania. He may lose his job and may commit crimes to get money for gambling. But studies show that suicide attempts are usually made by older people with problem gambling. Addiction to gambling at a young age increases the risk of suicide. Despite being aware of the serious negative consequences, or despite having a strong desire to quit, he cannot stop himself from gambling. When a gambler with severe ludo mania meets certain criteria, the condition is diagnosed as ‘clinical pathological gambling’. Analysis of casino customer data may help identify problem gamblers, but casino owners do not share this data for fear of losing their most lucrative customers (may be 25 – 50%). To experience the same excitement, he needs larger wagers or more frequent gambling.

There are chances that he has other psychiatric problems at the same time; for example, substance use disorder, mood and anxiety disorder, personality disorder, etc. ‘Problem gambling’, also known as ‘ludo mania’, can destroy the life of the gambler and also of his/her family members. Gambling addiction is referred to as ‘compulsive gambling’ or ‘impulse-control disorder’, where the behavior of the gambler is similar to that of a person who has substance addiction.

When an individual realizes that gambling is destroying his family and social life, he thinks of quitting, but in just a few hours or within a couple of days, he is again found in a gaming zone or casino

Top 5 Betfair Horse Racing Trading Tips For Beginners

Note also that making around 2 to 3 per race would give you a profit at the end of the day of around 50 – not bad for a few hours work. Now, this bettor who has placed the large bet, takes these back bets, lets it run for a little while, then places a series of large lay bets, forcing the price back out. Its price is 12.0 on the lay side and 20.0 on the backside. Similarly, if there is a large amount on the lay side, the price is likely to go out (get higher). Fact. If the market does move against you it is still easy enough to close out for zero loss. This will cause a number of traders to pile in ahead of it (following the money), forcing the price down. The trick is to watch for the build up of these positions – comes with practise – and dip in ahead of them, then ride the price movement to a nice profit.

Alright, so you’ve got yourself a Betfair account, you’ve downloaded Bet Angel or Gruss as your betting interface, had a little dabble, but still aren’t sure what you need to be looking for in order to start making some money. Now, I understand that many of you will ignore this. Essentially, what you need to look out for are two empty price increments. If there is a significant amount on the back side of the book, the price is going to ger shorter (get lower). . If you lose, don’t let it upset you, simply forget about it and move on to the next race…

It’s worth pointing out that these types of bet can take some time to be filled, and practise is needed if the price starts bouncing around. You can also “feel” that the market isn’t moving as it should, as the back bets are often gobbled up faster than you would expect.

4) Look Out For “Spoofers”. I know I did, but it is a stupidly risky thing to do and should be avoided at all costs. Essentially what happens is a bettor on Betfair will place a large bet on one side of the book – let’s say it’s on the back side, as that is the usual scenario (although it does happen frequently both ways). And it’s tax free.

For example, you see Horse A is trading at 7.0 on the lay side and 7.6 on the back side. Simply take the loss and move on. Nonetheless, this is one of the more fullproof ways of making small, consistent profits.

Just a few pre-tips beforehand: The best time to trade a race is around 10 minutes before the off. This causes all the traders who got in thinking they could ride the back side to jump ship, forcing the price out even more as each one fights to minimise their loses. Certainly I got caught out a number of times when I first started. It’s probably a good idea to trade horses with prices between 10.0 to 17.0 to start with, as at these levels the market is easier to “read”. This is where you place your bet – a lay stake at 13.0 to 13.5.

1) Follow The Money. This can of course be repeated until the market catches up.

5) DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, LET YOUR BET GO IN-RUNNING. This is something to watch out for when following Tip 1 on this list. Horse racing prices move where the money dictates. This tip involves looking for large gaps in the market, seeing where money has been taken (a feature of the betting software) and placing your bet accordingly. This is when the action starts and liquidity markedly increases. You now place bets at 7.2 and 7.4, meaning you in essence control both sides of the book and it’s very likely both sides will be taken, leaving you with a small profit. If you place a bet and the market moves against you, don’t hold on and on, hoping it will come back into profit, eventually letting the race start – you will end up losing a large chunk of cash. Indeed, how you take your losses – and there will be some – is just as important as making the wins count. While not as useful a tool as it once was, exploiting “gaps” can still be a very profitable addition to any betting system.

3) Speculate On Large Price Movements. Well, here are my top tips on how to “read” the pre-race horse racing markets and as such start to make a profit, while minimising the potential for losses.

For instance, Horse A is running in the 5:10 at Galway. This is more suited to Irish racing, where there is lower liquidity, meaning price movements are far more pronounced. Consistency is the key.

With practise, this technique is relatively easy to spot, as spoofers tend to use far larger sums that is usual on Betfair.

2) Look Out For “Gaps” In The Market. This is much easier to do using the “Ladder” interface view on Gruss or Bet Angel. You notice that there have been a few nibbles at around 13.0. If it gets taken, you then place a back bet at anywhere between 16 and 18, and if that gets taken you secure a nice profit

Forex Trading for a Living

Persist with your goals and learn from your mistakes. These are followed by some tips to help you trade forex and make it your primary, full-time job.

If you are considering trading forex for a living, here’s a word of caution for you. Once you are adept at the workings of the markets and have turned pro in skills and market timing, you can consider making it your full-time occupation. Trust your intuition and experience. Great successes can only be based on proper defenses. Furthermore, you must learn the tricks of controlling losing bets from cascading out of control. Open positions in forex markets, especially when you have taken large positions in a single currency, leaving you with very heavy risks of potential losses, in case of adverse exchange rate movements in that particular currency. Do a proper trend analysis to know your entry and exit positions. Having a fair and level head is an absolutely essential prerequisite when you think about entering this option. Know who your friends and advisors are, and check their background track records before you follow them blindly. Only if you have the grit and determination to succeed despite failures and have the requisite financial knowledge and education, are you qualified to even consider becoming a full-time forex trader. Last but not the least, the market is a cruel world that shows big dreams. As a beginner, you can only play it low and safe, till you gain the absolutely essential exposure and experience to become a pro. Strategies

Apart from this, you need to have adequate financial knowledge about how these markets work, what are the different trading strategies for the same, and which is the best strategy for you, i.e., which one is in the best alignment with your income goals, investment horizons, risk willingness, and other factors. Remember that, when you trade forex for a living, it is your primary source of income, and it is your duty not to put it under unnecessary jeopardy. Failure is a part and parcel of the job, so do not make losing money your final failure. It is true that you can earn huge amounts by trading in these markets, but it is also true that only a few highly skilled individuals actually do so, and the probability of that happening is very low. Till then, make it a secondary job, parallel to your primary one. Learn all the possible money management skills, for they are absolutely essential for survival in this rough and tough field. Granted that the filed has scope for big money, but like all other things we do for a livelihood, this too has some pros and cons. The forex market is too fickle to stay down, or up for that matter, forever. Thus, it is up to you to make an informed decision regarding whether you have it in you to go for it. If you think you have it, go for it, as the gains can be especially high.. If that probability in itself is low, you can just imagine how low the probability of that happening on a regular basis is; think about it.

Your trading game plan should be based on one of the following strategies or should be a combination of them. Though these may reduce your upscale profit potential, these will also put a floor on your potential losses. Gain experience and exposure first. If you thought that this job entailed just a few hours in front of your computer, expertise in a few technical analysis tools for trend analysis and statistical probabilities, and a secure means of steady income flow, you couldn’t be more wrong. If you think you have what it takes, read the following paragraphs that will take you a step closer in learning it, like a pro.

Prerequisites to Enter These Markets

Before you dive head first into the forex trading field, please gain adequate information about queries like, “does anyone make a living out of it” and “how much capital does one need for it.” These two questions should be enough of a reality check on your big money schemes. Forex trading is surely not for the fainthearted. It is always best to take time out after a loss or failure, for this will help you view your mistakes objectively. Always hedge your risks. To help you in your dream job, the paragraphs below list the main trading strategies. You can move on to taking on increased risk for reaping greater rewards, when you advance in this field. If you already have another job, never leave it on a whim to trade forex and making big money. Waiting for higher gains that may never materialize is a common folly. Mastering the techniques mentioned below should help you in your goal:

Trading StyleEarning ObjectiveTime HorizonOther InformationPosition More than one thousand pips Many weeks or even months Though the stop-loss is high, at about 100 to 200 pips, the position taken is of a small size, less than 1% of account size Swing Between 200 to 500 pips Between 2 to 10 days With a position size of about 2% of the account, the strategy comes with a 25 to 50 pips stop-loss. Intraday Between 75 and 150 pips Single day timeframe Position is of about 2% to 5% of account size and there is a stop-loss of around 15 to 25 pips. Scalp Less than 50 pips About 3 hours max Position sizes of between 5 to 25% of account size with a stop loss of between 7 and 20 pips. pip = the smallest possible price change in an exchange rate

As a beginner, just aim for maximum account growth at minimal risk. Options and forex trading require much more in the mind than in skills. Its dynamics requires great skill and timing, the ability to withstand a few blows (there will certainly be quite a few), and a hundred percent acceptance of a few extra-gray hair that you will always seem to be growing. In this trade, beginner’s luck always wears off, and it is a sheer skill and precise market timing that will let you survive in the long run. Leave your personal feelings out of this, especially greed, for it can be your downfall. If it is the risk you crave, you have other, marginally safer, (and easier to learn) options like stocks and futures trading. Exiting positions at the right time is the only thing that will make you money. Money management will also teach you to retain your winners in the “winners” category over the long run. Always trade in currency pairs, for this will serve as a kind of hedging technique

The History of Your Favorite Sport Team’s Name: NBA Eastern Conference

I went down there not too long ago and got a sunburn that still hasn’t gone away yet.

This was another poll, this one was done in 1968. And Boston is full of Irishmen.

Detroit Pistons

The Syracuse Nationals relocated to Philly in 1963 and of course we all know how big (Liberty Bell) Philadelphia is into The Declaration of Independence which was signed in ‘1776’. When the NBA began its infancy the teams founder wanted to keep the New York tradition alive, so he named the team after that baseball team. I guess there are a lot of hunters in that place where the Bucks play and they all decided on the name ‘Bucks’. The team owner Bob Johnson like the fact that his first name (Bob) was in the team name and ran with it. When they moved to Atlanta the name stayed shortened. Those lucky dogs in Charlotte. It’s hot in Miami. bobcats are indigenous to Western North Carolina. Dogs get no respect.

This NBA team name has numbers in it! This one has to be interesting, right?

I can’t resist…watch this video below. But wait, this story is about to get funny. How fitting that the word ‘Pistons’ was already in there. Klein considered a couple of names, but after his young son told him that his ideas were a bunch of ‘bull’ the name was born. Sounds like a swat team or a super hero league something. The team had also considered the name ‘Cougars’ the nickname of Carolinian’s ABA team and Dragons. Check this out, the guys name was Ned Irish. The team was named after the Sauk indian Chief Black Hawk. The team moved to the place where the Bucks play for awhile (damn I thought I was done with that dumb name) and shortened it to Hawks. As for their stupid name, it’s not hard to figure out where it came from. That would be cool.

Indiana Pacers

This one is obvious if you know anything about American history.

New Jersey Nets

Chicago Bulls

The name has been shortened to the KNICKS, but some still call them the Knickerbockers.

In 2004 one of these polls was done again and the names that came up were, Dragons, Flight (really?), and Bobcats. Oh what’s that you say, what do greyhounds have to do with Charlotte? Ha, let me tell you something. Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Zollner Pistons moved to Detroit in 1957. This year less flopping because of the new rules and hey look at that. The Dutch settlers that populated what is now New York were known to wear pants that rolled up below the knees. Next.

New York Knicks

Milwaukee Bucks

First of I’d just like you all to know I hate spelling out Milwaukee. It shows the most blatantly embarrassing flop I have ever seen in my life courtesy of the Miami Heat’s Chris Bosh.

Guess not. Hey how come these teams are never named after dogs? I like dogs.

Atlanta Hawks

Philidelphia 76ers

Miami Heat

Did you know that the team name “Celtics” originated in New York?

First lets start with the definition:

I am a New York Knicks fan so let me start this off by saying, The Heat suck! They flop all day long and get the majority of calls from the refs when they do. Now the team is moving back to NY and will be called The Brooklyn Nets. In addition “Nets” rhymed with other New York Sports teams at the time, The Mets and Jets (I guess they wanted some type of unity). I was a little bit excited about this one.

Okay, before I check I’m gonna guess there are a lot of hawks in ATL.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Toronto Raptors

team owner Richard Klein was brainstorming nicknames for his new franchise in 1966 and was looking for a name that put an emphasis on Chicago’s meat capital of the world status. Eventually they held a nationwide vote that concluded with the name Raptors, which the film Jurassic Park made popular at the time. See even right there I just copied and pasted. Checkmate. The name stemmed from the net on a basketball hoop. I have taking a Greyhound bus down south plenty of times and many other people have as well. The Milwaukee Skunks…hmmm. Many names were thrown around, Whirlwinds, Olympians, Unicorns (really? The Boston Unicorns?) , but Brown wanted Celtics, saying, The name has a great basketball tradition from the New York Celtics. TADAA!

Now let’s get to the sports!

The first organized team in BASEBALL, yes BASEBALL was named The New York Knickerbockers or The Knickerbocker Nine. Stupid name in my opinion. These pants became known as “Knickerbockers” or “Knickers”.

Wow look at that. Eh. Get it? I put the 76 in bold see? Yeah ok, moving along.

This name was the winner of a poll conducted by the Cleveland Plain-Dealer in 1970. I like the name ‘Tornadoes’ for them, because tornadoes make things fall, just like they do when ever you come next to them, they fall to the floor trying to get a foul called.

One of the most popular sports teams of my generation, who had the most popular sports star (Michael Jordan) of all time. I kind of like The Atlanta Black Hawks. The owners of Toronto’s prospective NBA expansion team conducted extensive market research across Canada in 1994. Jerry Tomoko who suggested the name wrote, Cavaliers represent a group of daring fearless men, whose life pact was never surrender, no matter what the odds.

This was another poll, this time conducted for the expansion team in 1986. In 1948 3 cities (Moline, Rock Island, IL and Davenport, IA) known as the “Tri-Cities” were given NBA team. It would have been nice to be the first person to say, “this team stinks” after the first bad game.

Boston Celtics

YAWN. No offense people from that place where the Bucks play.

of Celts: relating to the Celts, or their languages or culturesIndo-European language group: an Indo-European group of languages that includes Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, and Breton and has Brythonic and Goidelic subgroups.ancestor of modern Celtic languages: the reconstructed language that is the ancestor of modern Celtic languages

Now to the basketball part.

Another team with a cat in the name. In 1946 when the Basketball Association of America (the forefather of the NBA) began, Walter Brown, head of the Boston Garden Arena Corp. As you probably know Indianapolis is big on car racing. Once again the third team on oour list owes it’s origin to the great state of New York.

Interestingly enough the name did not originate from the ‘Motor City’. Other names included, Sharks, Tornadoes, Beaches, and Barracudas. They should change it back and come out with some Black and White uniforms. Before joining the NBA in 1977, the team moved back to New Jersey and became The New Jersey Nets. This one seemed kind of generic to me. Remember the Celtic stuff from above?

Originally in the 1920s before the NBA was started there was a New York team named The Celtics. Named after owner Fred Zollner’s piston business he dropped the first part of the name after the move. Had they named the team the Charlotte Greyhounds they might be winning some games. What ever the name is this team has sucked for years and if you ask me that’s what they get for naming the team after another goddamn cat. Hmmm, so if this marketing team for Toronto was doing this now in 2012 instead of 1994 what would the team name be? The Toronto iPads? The name ‘Bob Cats’ was a runner up. was looked at to name the team. They ain’t winning that much anymore. The only interesting thing about this one is the fact that one of the runner-up names was ‘Skunks’. It looks like Jersey gets no love, huh.. This team was bound to when a couple of championships.

The New Jersey Americans was a charter member of the ABA in 1967. The team moved to Commack, NY, then changed it’s name to the New York Nets. Next.

Charlotte Bobcats

The word ‘Pacing’ describes one of the main gates in harness racing and pace cars are used for auto races like the Indy 500. At least they still have the Jordan statue and the rings.

The Term Knickerbocker was big in New York in the 1600

Negative Effects of Gambling

The two go hand in hand. Card games, coin tossing, and dice-based games are some non-casino based forms of gambling. The skill of a gambler lies in weighing the three parameters and making a decision about what amount should be staked and how much should be expected in return.

A majority of those addicted to gambling have substance abuse disorders.. Their debt keeps building and it may reach an amount that exceeds their capacity to repay.

Initially, one looks at gambling as a way to run away from life’s problems, or from stress, anger, and loneliness. To add to the so-called merry atmosphere, gamblers often smoke or drink while playing.

Problem gamblers and addicts tend to abuse their family members. Rehabilitating the gambling addicts needs money and time, and the process is not very easy. Betting is a mentally taxing activity, and as one goes on risking more and more money, anxiety starts building.

Compulsive gambling leads to bankruptcy

Apart from absence at work and drop in efficiency, a common observation is that gamblers tend to steal money and engage in fraudulent behavior to recover from financial losses incurred when gambling, or to get more money to bet.

Similar to how an individual keeps consuming substances like drugs or alcohol to experience an altered mental state, he continues to gamble. The addiction leads people to continue with gambling irrespective of whether they earn or lose in the deal. Sports betting and arbitrage betting are the other types. When they lose the money they had risked, they further gamble to recover the lost amount and it becomes a vicious circle even they can’t escape from.

Gambling is practiced as a means of recreation. It causes a decline in his/her work performance, thus hampering his career.

Children of parents who are problem gamblers or gambling addicts tend to feel abandoned and angry, further increasing stress and leading to strained family relations.

According to a research by NCPG, 76 percent of problem gamblers are likely to have a major depressive disorder.

Games offered in casinos, table games like poker, Red Dog, and Blackjack, as also electronic games like Slot Machine and Video Poker are some of the common types of gambling. It can drag you into crime, gambling isn’t fun.

According to the University of New York, in people with alcohol use disorders, the chances of developing an addiction to gambling are 23 times higher.

Gamblers often exhibit mood swings and a strangely secretive behavior. On giving a serious consideration to the negative effects of gambling, we realize that it is best avoided.

The stress from gambling may lead to health issues like ulcers, stomach problems, muscle pains, headaches, and problems with sleep.

You could be at gunpoint or holding the gun. The stress of risking huge amounts of money or the frustration after losing it can increase the tendency of abuse in gamblers. The effect is similar to that of having a drug or a drink, which is why gambling changes one’s mental state and mood.

People who fall prey to gambling tend to remain away from their families and waste money on other bad practices. It soon becomes a habit that can’t be broken.

Gambling at the cost of one’s job results in a decline in the quality of his professional life. Thus, gambling practices cause a huge financial burden on the families of the affected and on the society at large.

Gambling has proven to be addictive. Due to lost mental peace, they may ill-treat their spouse and children. The decision to gamble money is based on three parameters namely; how much to bet, the predictability of the event, and the conditions agreed upon, between the gamblers. A recreational activity is supposed to be refreshing and relaxing, but something like gambling is contrary to the very purpose of recreation. The National Council of Problem Gambling (NCPG) describes this type of gambling behavior as problem gambling.

The costs of treating compulsive gamblers are huge. A study by the same university suggested that 73% of the individuals who are imprisoned are found to be problem gamblers.

Studies show that children with a sibling or parent addicted to gambling, are more likely to take to substance abuse.

Gambling = Thoughtless Expenditure + Waste of Time

Additionally, rehabilitation and public assistance systems are taxed.

They start borrowing money and take secret loans. It only leads to a thoughtless expenditure of money and valuables.

Gambling refers to the betting of money on an event with an uncertain outcome, with the intent of winning additional wealth. Addiction to gambling, coupled with substance abuse can make the gamblers physically abusive towards their family. In spite of the losses incurred, they continue betting. According to the National Research Council, 10 to 17% of the children of problem gamblers have been abused and so have 25 to 50% of the partners of problems gamblers.

An Austrian study said that around 1 in 5 suicidal patients had a gambling problem.

According to a study by the George State University, 50% of the problem gamblers commit crime. The addiction has negative effects on one’s physical and mental health and it proves to be detrimental to one’s social, personal, and professional life. They tend to stay away from their near ones, resulting in distrust between them and their loved ones.

Mental and physical health problems, financial issues, and conflicts in the family are among the common negative effects of gambling. The greed never ends and they keep betting more and more. Forget satisfaction or peace, it is not even refreshing in the real sense. The addiction gets on to the gamblers to such an extent that they fail to think wisely before acting. Their mental state can even lead to suicidal tendencies.

Over time, the practice of gambling starts becoming a habit and begins to have damaging effects at psychological, physical, and social levels. Because of this, they land in worse situations and take the wrong decisions in life.

People continue gambling with the greed of winning money. They engage in gambling activities at the cost of their time with family and friends. Over time, it becomes a habit, and eventually an obsession that can’t be overcome. Six to eight million people in America are estimated to have a gambling problem.

Gambling can lead to criminal activities. Some take to substance abuse to supplement the high they get from winning huge sums while gambling. Thus, gambling can have a grave economic impact which is difficult to reverse.

Research has shown that gambling can lead to harmful behavior in people. Some go that way to forget the sorrow of losing big sums when gambling.

Substances of abuse are served at casinos and in pubs and clubs, thus increasing the likelihood of gamblers consuming them. The addiction robs a gambler of all the productive time and leads to loss of efficiency at work. In the following sections of this Buzzle article, we discuss the negative effects of gambling on the individual and society.

The addiction to gambling can leave one in bankruptcy. This proves to be detrimental to their social and family life. As gambling leads to increased criminal activities, in a way, gamblers add to the burden on prisons and the legal system.

Addiction to gambling has been linked with substance abuse

Federal Effort to Ban State-Regulated Online Gambling is a Solution in Search of a Problem

Jason Chaffetz (R-U.T.) will continue his push for a federal ban on state-regulated online gambling with a hearing in the Chaffetz-chaired House Oversight & Government Reform Committee. Perhaps most surprising of all is a carve-out for daily fantasy sports, which Rep. While RAWA would obliterate by fiat the regulated online gambling markets in Delaware, Nevada, and New Jersey, the bill curiously preserves a broad class of online gambling products:

Online betting on horse races gets a pass, despite the fact that the results of races can be used to power slot and bingo-like consumer products. So-called “charitable” gambling (often in reality a for-profit industry) is gifted a loophole that is sure to be exploited. Customers have created nearly a million accounts, and billions of dollars of transactions have flowed through those accounts, yet documented reports of underage play, out-of-state access, or criminal activity have been virtually non-existent. Chaffetz included in RAWA despite the intense scrutiny the industry is facing from policy makers and law enforcement on both the federal and state levels.

That final carve-out deserves special attention, as it will dramatically weaken the ability of law enforcement to battle illegal sports betting — the very activity that the Wire Act was introduced to combat. Myriad forms of fantasy sports betting and wagering on the hundreds of individual outcomes that make up a sporting event (at-bats, foul shots, even the starting coin flip in a football game) would be completely outside of the reach of the Wire Act following Rep. As voices from across the political spectrum — including many with a distaste for gambling — have repeatedly noted, RAWA is fundamentally flawed policy that would obliterate a rapidly-growing, highly-regulated industry while actually weakening the power of law enforcement to target and dismantle illegal gambling operations. Post-passage, the Wire Act would apply only to illegal sports betting based on the score or final outcome of a game. What’s more, illegal offshore online gambling sites have by and large exited states with regulated online gambling — even as they continue to operate in other states. Chaffetz will use the hearing as a platform to advance H.R.

That critical edit guts the Wire Act. 707, the Restoration of America’s Wire Act (RAWA). Chaffetz’s championing of RAWA may be well-intended. RAWA would ultimately have the opposite impact, and would harm consumers, state government, and federal law enforcement in the bargain.

As long as would-be bookies stay within this massive, ambiguously-defined safe harbor, they’ll have little to fear from the primary weapon in the federal government’s arsenal for battling illegal sports betting. To what end? Regulated online gambling has generated over $40mm in tax revenue and hundreds of local jobs for these states.

RAWA would immediately outlaw state-regulated online gambling markets in Delaware, Nevada, and New Jersey. Chaffetz’s restoration.

On December 9th, Rep. Code Title 31 (the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA).

How? RAWA alters the definition of “bet or wager” in the Wire Act to exclude a class of activities described in 5362(1)(E) of US. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who introduced RAWA in the Senate, has suggested that online lottery sales be placed beyond the law’s reach.

Rep. Sen. But if his goal is to decrease unfettered access to Internet gambling, it is also deeply misguided.
